《少女日记》自1919年德文版首次问世以来，就引起了强烈轰动，它的真实性也遭到了质疑。不少人认为本书的作者就是日记的发现者（德文版编辑）奥地利心理学家艾尔米纳•哈格•冯•胡格斯坦因，书中的主人公丽塔是她所杜撰的人物，但是，艾尔米纳并不承认。也有人认为，此书的作者就是19世纪的奥地利少女格雷特•拉尼尔。作者的真实身份至今已经争议百年，仍是个未解之谜。
